how to transcribe

links: text translation archive // signups

So you want to help us transcribe our scanslations into text format? Good for you. This means that you are well on your way to becoming a fantastic and super person.

We originally had a text translation archive going in the first incarnation of our website, but it was lost when the site crashed with no HD backup. We want it back badly, with a sick kind of wanting. We don't have the time. This is where YOU come in!

guidelines

You're basically just acting as our copy machine in transferring the text on our scanslated projects back into their original, texty form. No vigilante spellchecking or grammar checking on our behalf without notice, please. We're always open to being told when and where we've screwed up, but if you do fix it for us without us knowing, how the heck are we going to learn? If you catch bad spelling and/or grammar in our original scanslation, do feel free to tell us so that you don't replicate our mistakes into the text version. Make a notation of it in the beginning of the file so that we can't possibly miss it, though.

Please sign up at the forum for the title that you wish to transcribe. It'll keep overlaps from happenning and save you and us some work in sorting out everything! Plus, you'll get to see who else is a die hard fan.

Please include the following info when you make a post.

    • Your name.
    • Your contact email
    • The title of the SHI-RAN project you would like to take on.
    • When you can have it done by. Please finish it within two weeks, otherwise I will consider that your offer is rescinded and I will make a notation onto your post to cancel it.

Three Wolves Mountain Chapter 1

To be finished and submitted by September 20th.

Format

Currently this is the legend that we are using as a standard for all the text translations, in order to differentiate texts between the pages. You may use the existing text translations in our archive as a guide for how to transcribe the text.

[text] =	text in bubbles, boxes
{text} = text outside of bubbles or boxes
	/text = small handwritten texts
	text = 		dialogue
sfx: *text* = onomatopoeic (otherwise, it is a description of the noise)

Use tabs between the name of the character and the text associated with that character to line all the text up neatly.

For instance: (excerpt from Three Wolves Mountain, ch 1, page 6)

boy:	But! He won't be a problem at all!
Tarou's very smart! And he's always looked after me...

dog: ....
		/shut up you idiot!

Also, for sound effects (sfx), please remember that you're also going to be taking note of whether or not the text we've put in is describing the sound or trying to imitate it (onomatopoeia). For the latter, you don't need to put asterisks in. For the former, please do so.

for instance: (no excerpt, this is just a random example)

sfx: *barking*

sfx: bow wow

File type

Please save it as a .txt, text-only file. Do not save as a rich text file (.rtf) or word document (.doc)

Submissions

Please submit your transcribed .txt files as an attachment to cibo AT shi-ran DOT cjb DOT net. Remember that you need to have signed up at the forum before submitting anything, in order that you don't begin working on something that someone else has already done, or signed up to work on.

Make sure that you also paste the info.txt file text into the top of the text file, and include your own information so that we'll know who to credit with transcribing!

Reference Examples

If you're getting confused you can read part of a text transcription that already exists.

Scanslation example: 3WM ch1

Text translation transcription: 3WM ch1 part 1

Extra notes

Please include all text. All texts that you see in English should be included within the text file as part of the translation. Do not leave anything out.

What to Expect

The email basically just winds up in my mailbox. I'll read it and scan it for errors and if I find any, I'll just email that back to you. Please don't take it as a personal offense that I'm trying to correct your work, it's just that we want to keep things all in one nice tidy standard. This is all going to be manually checked, so it might take some time (like up to a week?) for me to get to it.
